The First And Last Days

of The War on Drugs

By

Heroin, Cocaine and "the evil weed" Marijuana, were first banned in the U.S. a century ago under the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act. Harry Anslinger, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics Chief who launched the drug war in the 1930's, targeted Latinos, African-Americans and Chinese. His Agents hounded singer Billie Holliday for her heroin habit but covered up Judy Garland's. In "Chasing The Scream", Journalist and Author Johann Hari embarked on a 3 year, 9 nation quest to examine the societal impact of the drug war. Today, other countries are setting an example of how to lower the demand for illegal drugs by decriminalizing them and treating addicts who use drugs to mask their pain, be it psychological or physical.

Last week, we brought you "The Rosie Effect", best-selling Author Graeme Simsion's follow-up on the quirky and highly amusing love story of socially-challenged Genetics Professor, Don Tillman and grad student Rosie Jarman, published in 2013. In case you missed it, "The Rosie Project", introduced Don, who's 39 and feeling the tick-tock of the biological clock. He embarks on a scientific quest to find a mate and dubs it "The Wife Project" which included a 16-page questionnaire. Rosie Jarman, a Doctoral student in Psychology, seems to be the antithesis of the ideal woman Don seeks. When she asks him to use his DNA Expertise to find her biological father, Don's heart begins to overtake his mind and his quest to complete "The Wife Project" surprisingly becomes "The Rosie Project".

Rewire Your Brain For Stronger,

More Rewarding Relationships

By

Amy Banks, M.D.

Sometimes, we all experience a feeling of loneliness or isolation. Thankfully, it's only temporary. But millions of Americans suffer from chronic disconnection. According to a 2006 Purdue University Study, 25% of us are truly alone, unable to name a single person we feel close to. In her groundbreaking book, Dr. Amy Banks, a Psychiatrist who's taught at Harvard Medical School, contends that isolation and disconnection from others is a growing health problem that must be addressed because it causes stress, disease and even shortens life spans. Humans are wired for close relationships. We need social support and this book offers a roadmap for developing four essential ingredients for close relationships.
